Connect Singapore

Hey everyone,

I’m here to share about Connect Singapore. To those who are not involved in CS, the pledge recital of Connect Singapore did not happen to turn out smoothly. As most of you have known, unfortunately, the DJ did not manage to lead the pledge over the radio and this led to a few schools not reciting it at all and it turned out to be rather anti-climax.

Most of the Singaporeans, sadly, would simply dismiss this event as a waste of time and a failure. However, why not let us be different and instead look at the positive side of things? As Kenneth from Heartware might have put it, we have successfully brought 29,000 youths together, without any major incidents which we have foreseen and prepared during SOP in our trainings. Isn’t that something for us to take our hats off to? Most, if not all of us, have also, for the first time in your life, take charge of over 1000 students and speaking to the entire school population. I believe through training student leaders and handling teachers and principals, all of us have learnt many different skills.

So let us give ourselves a pat on the back for we know that we have put in our very best into this project. Yet it is important to note that despite the mammoth size of the project, Connect Singapore is ultimately another project but what matters is the experience we learnt from it and how we move on from there.

Can those who are involved (be it BIC, CM or LV) do a reflection and send it to us by email? No word limits nor restrictions. But try to focus on what you have learnt from this experience for we believe that reflecting upon one’s actions after an event is a part of experiential learning and perhaps the best way to truly learn from it.

Thanks!

Cheers,
Eric!

hello ylepers,

sorry for lack of updates! :)

Some important announcements to be made so please take note!

1) General Meetings would be held every 1st wednesday of the month from 2pm to 2.30pm. Locations have yet to be confirmed so please look out for updates. If you cannot make it for this slot, please send a mail to hcylep@gmail.com stating your reason.

2) National Day Dinner would be coming up really soon at West Coast. They need us to help them make a photo montage. The photos are already with either winnie or jensen. If you can help in this area, pls let us know, thanks!!

3) Connect Singapore: Hope you guys have been regularly going for the trainings and stuff. Please let Emily/Winnie know about your progress in the event, like the dates of your block meetings and SL trainings that you have gone for.

4) Peer tutoring: The program is still ongoing and those who have yet to complete 20 hours of tutoring, please contact your tutees to arrange for sessions. Emily has sent out emails regarding the hours chocked up by the tutors, please check if these hours are correct.

5) Overall attendance: As YLEP is now a CCA, all members are required to have at least 75% attendance at Meet the People Sessions and General Meetings (very very impt). As for adhoc events, everyone is to complete a minimum of 30 hours, including compulsory events like Connect Singapore unless you have a valid reason.

6) Lastly, we are having a new system, whereby subcommittees are being created for adhoc events like National Day, Disability Camp, Open Day etc etc. Each exco member would be heading a subcomm and members would form the rest of the committee. Winnie has sent out a list with the allocation of the members, please check which commitee you are in. Please notify the leader of the subcomm if you have probs committing to that time period / want to do a swap.

Thank you!!! :D

peer tutoring.

we've noted that there are people with more than 5 tutees, sorry about this, we will rectify the problem once we confirm the list of new members next week.

if youre currently facing any problems(eg. attendance, discipline, fixing dates, etc), please reflect to us as soon as possible at hcylep@gmail.com. we will try to help. =)

please remember to inform yvonne if theres any changes in your tutees or if you guys cannot make it for any sessions.

we will be checking the log sheets soon. please try to make up for the sessions you missed. i know some of you might think of extending the sessions to make up for the hours, but please do not go beyond 3 hours. we know that most people have limited attention span.. theyre probably be losing their concentration by the 3rd hour. its best if you can find another day in the week to conduct a makeup session instead =)

28 March 2008

Welcome to YLEP!

Here is for the benefit for some people who are interested in joining YLEP :D
YOUTH LEADERS EXPERIENTIAL PROGRAMME

INTRODUCTION

Youth Leaders Experiential Programme (YLEP) is a collaboration between Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) and the Ayer Rajah-West Coast CCC ( Citizen’s Consultative Committee) . Highlights include peer tutoring programme with Kent Ridge Secondary School, regular meet-the-people sessions, planning events for the community, playing an active role in the grassroots and exchange of ideas with grassroot leaders.

ACTIVITIES DESCRIPTION

1) Peer Tutoring Programme
YLEP members will be tutoring the less academically inclined students on a weekly basis at Kent Ridge Secondary School, mostly in subjects such as Mathematics or Science.

2) Meet the People’s Sessions
Meet the People’s Sessions (MPS) are weekly sessions whereby residents facing difficulties in terms of finance, family problems, etc. seek help from grassroots leaders who will then refer their cases to the related organisations. YLEP members sit in and observe the grassroots leaders at work ( learn more about the policies and gain exposure to the different problems) . After proper training, we will then help out with the registration and typing of appeal letters to relevant organisations. It is an opportunity for members to understand the myriad of problems faced by the underprivileged community and thus play a pivotal role in helping the community. Moreover, interaction with grassroot leaders and MP after each session provides a greater exposure for our members and a platform for exchange of ideas.

Details
Held at Ayer Rajah every 1st , 3rd and 5th Monday
Held at West Coast every 2nd and 4th Monday
Start at 8pm , registration ends at 9.30pm , but after interaction with MP, activity likely at end at 11pm.

3) Befriender’s Programme ( Still under development)
The Befriender’s Programme is a programme initiated by West Coast CC to do a follow-up on people who need help and have previously turned up for the MPS. The help given to these people during the MPS is usually short term. YLEP members play a part in the programme in three areas: 1) Reorganising personal particulars and information according to age group, nature of case, etc. so that volunteers are able to identify people who need help most 2) Accompanying volunteers as they make rounds to visit these people to talk to them, and refer them to relevant organisations for help 3) Picking up groceries from some of the charity organisations and delivering them.

4) Bursary Awards Presentation
Bursary Awards are presented to students who have achieved commendable academic results, and whose gross family income is below $2000 a month. These awards are given out in a bid to encourage students from less privileged families to strive for academic excellence, and provide them with opportunities to further their potential. YLEP members help by keying in personal particulars and data of processed application forms, writing names on cheques to successful applicants, and performing ushering duties during the presentation ceremony.

5) March to Charity
This is an annual charity event organised by West Coast CC. There are three phrases in total. The event will start off with fundraising for the beneficiaries followed by rendering direct services to them E.g in 2008, fundraising was in form of old items collection of which the items collected were sold to raise funds. In the next few phases, we brought the elderly to River Hong Bao for an outing and red packets are distributed to them as a bonus.

6) West Coast Community Day
The objective of a Community Day is to encourage community engagement among residents and promote a healthy lifestyle in urban living. YLEP members will be the main organisers this year and several events will be happening simultaneously on that day. Examples of activities may include flea market, family competitions, heritage hunts, talks, games, performances, prize presentation etc.

7) Adhoc Projects by CCC

ATTENDANCE
Attendance for all events is compulsory since you have committed yourself to this programme.

CIP HOURS
As we are negotiating for YLEP to be an external cca , the details on cip hours will be further discussed

27 March 2008

Dear all,

Please check your email for the new peer tutoring schedule, to be followed immediately starting next week, Monday 31/3/2008. Thank you!

emily's post!

In my opinion, this orientation programme is a very meaningful one as it allowed me to know my tutees better. By playing fun-filled games as a team, tutors and tutees were able to bond together and know one another better. In addition, it was a very good idea to allocate time for the tutors and tutees to interact. Through the interaction session, my tutees and I familiarized ourselves with one another. I gained a better understanding of my tutees, such as the areas they needed help in and their study methods. This has allowed me to plan my lessons to cater to their needs and thus, ensure that they really gain knowledge from and understand what I am teaching. Moreover, with a preliminary understanding of one another, I can be more at home with my tutees during the peer tutoring sessions. This has helped facilitate the peer tutoring sessions as my tutees can feel free to clear their doubts and I can also check on their progress. All in all, the orientation programme is very beneficial to both tutors and tutees and should continue to be implemented for future peer tutoring sessions! :D

Boon Yang's Entry!

[MPS Orientation]

[Feelings]
It's so easy to volunteer to work in an environment that one is comfortable with.

When we step into unfamiliar terrain, it is all about breaking out of our comfort zone.

It may be a burden at the start, but over time, it'll just become a part of lifestyle.

That is what the volunteers for the MPS has shown.

[What i've learnt]
I've learnt how things work during each Meet-the-People Session

Truly, "People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care."

MPS was about being there for the community, constantly reminding them that help is always available for those in need.
It is definitely no easy job, especailly with the volunteers having another vocation of their own.

[What I hope to learn more]
After attending the first MPS session, I was taken aback after facing the reality of social needs in our society today. It has been an eye-opener for me to hear about the situations, setbacks and problems faced by the residents. A small effort definitely goes a long way for these unfortunate group of people. There's really no way to express the experience in words. You need to be physically there to know what I'm talking about. See you at MPS!

Hey all,

Announcement: Please meet outside Fish Tank this Friday 7th March, 4pm. Ren Ying needs to collect $5 YLEP Fund and $11 for the T-shirt.

You all will be receiving the T-shirts on that day too!

----------

For Peer Tutoring, we apologise as some people actually have four or more tutees assigned to them now. This is due to some people deciding to quit YLEP. We will be taking in some more members this month and necessary adjustments will be made accordingly then. Until then, please adhere to the current schedule - the latest tutor-tutee allocation list will be emailed to all of you by this week.

The attendance for the previous two MPS was very poor. Please note that we have made it clear to you that it is a compulsory activity of YLEP, rescheduling is not possible due to tight schedule, hence we suggest that you find a replacement within the members of the programme if you really cannot make it due to valid reasons, at least a few days before your session on Mondays. Inform your respective I/Cs of the changes.

Lastly, there are no adhoc activities this coming Saturday.

Thank you. =)

melissa's post!

The orientation program held last weekend was a really memorable one. (: Basically, this event was carried out for tutors and tutees to get to know each other through a few hours of interaction and games. The tutees from Kent Ridge Secondary School were divided into their respective groups and each facilitator headed the group. Being a facilitator, I took on a group of students (group 6!) mainly comprising sec 2 and 3 students for a run of the games. Some of the games played were Jacob’s Ladder and Charades. The KRSS tutees really showed a lot of enthusiasm in the games and were really eager to do our group cheers. (:

I felt rather motivated for the peer tutoring program after this orientation as the tutees displayed much fervour during the day’s worth of activities. Albeit the short time frame, it was fun and enjoyable experience getting to know the KRSS tutees. (:

Hey guys, here is the first of our entries =D

Reflections for Budget Dialogue (Tricia)
The Budget Dialogue was quite a new experience for me as I have never attended such dialogues with the MPs before. :)

I think there was sufficient interaction between the residents and the MP, Mr Iswaran during the dialogue session. It was probably also relevant to everyone who attended the session in a way or another because the several questions raised were of different genres and concerned different age groups of the population.

Also, I thought the translation of what the MP said to Chinese was a good measure as well. It makes the dialogue sessions more accessible and reaches out to a larger group of residents, especially those who only understand Chinese and cannot understand English. It was also a good recap of what the MP had said previously, and allowed the audience to catch up on the issues that the MP had talked about, should they have missed out earlier on. However, it seemed to be a little time-consuming towards the end. The person in-charge of translating could also have been more effective in his translations as some content that was translated seemed to differ quite greatly in meaning from what the MP had said in English. This may seem quite trivial, but I thought some other parts of the translation were not very well done and sounded a little unpolished and crude as well (It is not my intention to sound rude or anything). However, I can’t provide any examples because I can’t remember them already. Maybe there can be improvement in this aspect of the Dialogue?

Personally I was quite impressed by Mr Iswaran. He tackled questions in a calm, confident manner and never failed to entertain us with humour here and there, whilst answering the residents’ questions in a clear and concise manner which showed a clear stand of his and the PAP on many issues proposed by the government. He was quite approachable and friendly too. :)

thanks tricia =D, guys keep those entries coming in!

Neighbourhood Carnival on Sunday 2nd March 2pm - 6pm

The Neighbourhood Carnival which is organized by the NC will be held at West Coast CC on Sunday, 2 March, 2pm to 6pm. All the grassroot leaders will be invited and Mr Iswaran is GOH.

There will be games booths, stage performances (Indian Dance, Chinese Orchestra, Science Show, quizzes, etc) and side-events like coloring contest, clown and balloon act, etc. Tickets at $2 will be pre-sold. Any left-over tickets can also be sold on that day itself. We will most likely be given free tickets :)
The numbered tickets with detachable tabs entitle each holder to play games and collect pop-corn, ice-cream, candy floss, refreshment boxes (food), etc at the various booths/counters.

Helpers for the event are needed:

- Help at registration desk to collect coupons for lucky draws (residents will be streaming in at any time between 3 to 6pm and 1-2 persons to be continuously stationed at the registration desk) and to give away goodie bags

- Man the NEA (National Environment Agency) Games Booth (at least 1 person to conduct the game and give out prizes; the theme will either be on dengue prevention, or recycling)

- Distribute food boxes at the food counter (4 persons to collect coupons in exchange for food boxes for 500 people)

- There will be 180-200 chairs and 6 tables which need to be set up in the Multi-Purpose Hall from the CC store room; this has to be done in the morning from 10am to 12pm. During this time, some of the sponsors will be setting up their exhibit panels and booths as well. The events organiser will be at the venue at about 1 to 2pm to set up the stage and audio system.

Please inform Yi Bing at 91897229 if you are able to make it.
To all j1s, you guys are strongly encouraged to interact with the grassroots leaders and the MP, we will be meeting them quite often, so you guys shouldn't be shy!
