hi J1s,
this is haokai's reflections after attending the house to house visits. hopefully more of you will participate in this too for the experience! :)
I personally felt that the house-to-house visit is an eye opener to me.
Firstly, just look at the amount of people following the MP. There were HDB representatives, Town Council representatives etc. it’s like they can solve any problems faced by residents, right here, right now.
Secondly, it is interesting listening to the problems faced by residents. There are some problems which seems to be small issues to us, but actually cause major inconvenience to their lives. One example is the lift upgrading program in BLK 408 (the block which I visited). Building a lift may be redundant to us, as we just have to take a few. However, to an elderly, those extra flights of stairs may be very painful to them. During the house-to-house visits, this issue is brought up many times by residents, especially senior citizens. What the MP, Mr Iswaran, is doing, is to get as many residents to support the project as possible.
Thirdly, it is amazing to see people from all walks of life living under one roof. On one hand, there are bus drivers and the unemployed, while on the other, there are computer programmers and doctors. There are local Singaporeans, staying in that flat for more than 10 years while at the same time, there are immigrants from China and India, continuing their dreams in Singapore. It is just amazing to see know how a small flat can reflect Singapore’s vibrant culture and lifestyles.
I have learnt a lot from the house-to-house visits and will certainly go if there are more to come.
thanks haokai!
